Game day is almost here! Which team are you routing for?
I’m undecided. Remember that I’m a New Englander, turned Seattleite, turned backed to a New Englander. So it’s a win-win situation for me. Also, I only really care about the food and drink. Just being honest.
But while I may not have strong opinions about the game itself, I am opinionated on what we should be drinking on Super Bowl Sunday. And that’s beer. Because the Super Bowl isn’t really the time or place for some complicated cocktails.
So that’s why I created this Wheat Ale and Orange Sangria. Just dump everything in a pitcher and you’re good to go. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
This beer sangria has some great fruity and herby undertones, so I think that even the non-beer drinkers (blasphemy!) will be asking for seconds. But it still tastes like beer. Which is a very good thing, in my humble opinion.
To give the ingredients time to mingle while still preserving some of the carbonation in the beer, I start by adding only half of the beer and chilling everything for 30-60 minutes. Then I gently stir in the remaining beer just before serving.
- 2 cups orange juice, cold
- 1/2 cup orange flavored liqueur
- 1/4 cup tequila
- 2 oranges, thinly slices
- A few sprigs of fresh rosemary
- A few sprigs of fresh thyme
- 6 (12 ounce) bottles Belgian-style wheat ale, cold
- In a very large pitcher or bowl, combine the orange juice, orange liqueur, tequila, orange slices and herbs. Slowly pour in 3 bottles of the beer. Stir gently to combine. Cover and refrigerate for 30-60 minutes. Then gently stir in the remaining 3 bottles of beer. Serve immediately.
I can’t even lie. I don’t watch the game. And Caleb is working all day, so I definitely won’t be watching it.
You’ll find me curled on the couch, reading “Gone Girl” and getting alone drunk on this sangria. LOVE IT. Pinned!
That sounds like my kind of day! Thanks, Taylor!
Yaaaaas. I love this idea! Beer cocktails can be tricky, but you knocked this one out of the park. Hope you have a great weekend, and GO PATS (duh).
Thanks, Sarah! Yeah Friday!
Whoa this sangria is perfect for me. Gorgeous photo too.
Thanks, Meagan! Let me know if you try it out!
Die hard 9ers fan over here, and since they (or the Broncos) aren’t playing, I’m not super into the SB this year either. But the food and drink and company? Heck yes. So this sangria – lay it on me sista!
I’m laying it on you! 🙂
I love the color of this drink, Liz! And that is such a great idea to make sangria with Blue Moon, my favorite beer! Sounds perfect for this Sunday, or any day! 🙂
Yes, no football game required to enjoy this! Thanks, Gayle!
Liz, I agree!! (even though I want the Hawks to win), it’s all about the food and drink. 🙂 LOVE this wheat ale and orange sangria!!! I’ve never had sangria with beer! this is fabulous!
Let me know if you try it out! Thanks, Alice!

This is such a gorgeous drink, Liz! It’s making me wish I was old enough to drink! Soon!
Start counting down the days, Tori! 🙂
Oh so fun and pretty!
These are like glasses of sunshine. Perfect!
Then I need like 6 glasses! 🙂
What a great cocktail for Super Bowl Sunday! I am pulling for the Seahawks because it’s a West coast thing and my team was no where close to making it! haha Hope you have a great day!
Thanks, Marcie! I’m still undecided!
How did I not see this before? It’s brilliant and I don’t think I can only have this during football season. No. This is definitely a year round kind of drink for me!
It’s kind of perfection for Halloween. I mean, the color!! XO
